About us
ReCreate started out as a mission to help people. So I gathered those of my close friends who didn’t have a job and who were struggling with a diagnosis – either physical or mental. We sat down in a garden in April, and started talking about how we could make something worthwhile – both in terms of money, but much more in terms of making people happy.
Many people with crafting skills can’t keep normal job hours due to ADHD, PTSD, Borderline etc. So I started thinking about how to run a business that adapted to these wonderful, creative people, instead of them having to adapt to a framework that didn’t fit their situation. Every day at ReCreate starts out with a morning huddle, where the recreaters share how they’re doing, and then move on to talk about the project of the day.
This has already had a greater impact than imagined, because although it sounds a bit hippie, the recreaters discovered that they all had troubles in their lives. Including those without a diagnosis. So suddenly, shame or a feeling of inadequacy was no longer an issue, and they started supporting each other, when one or another was going through a rough patch. This, combined with the crafting projects, led to a feeling of usefulness. So every day starts with less shame and a feeling of being able to contribute to people and to society, and this is the basic essence of how ReCreate came to be. We mainly work with recycling and upcycling, as well as use materials produced locally. We’re not perfect. Recycling, upcycling and recreating people is a process – but it’s a process worth being part of.
